Hailing from wartorn Kyiv, Rinal’ 78 is fueled with early Nine Inch Nails energy and electric grizzle, while also wearing a rough-around-the-edges hardcore Swans-like set of armor
The industrial classic acts are in their legacy era, yet rest assured, the underground electronic rock / metal scene has been slowly growing. From the raucous duo Youth Code or haunting club sound of Health to the instrument-frankenstein project Author & Punisher, interest is here, and innovation is alive. Newcomers R78 holds commonalities to the aforementioned’s experimentation and allure, but is nonetheless, their own bizarre sound, wholly.
Members Vlad Semykopnyi and Daryna Stadnyk convey angst, frustration, and despair through avant garde-electronic-jazz-punk splatters on their latest six-track offering Post-Human.
The God Bombs may have been doing a similar grungy approach to industrial rock recently, but Rinal’ 78‘s more harsh, genuine approach on tracks like “Energy” or “Synthetic” are arguably more compelling; the latter song merging Nirvana and Fear Factory. Additionally, the two-piece combo of “My Cold Revenge” and “Mechanize My Body” would fit perfectly into Generation Z’s recent goth revival aesthetics.
When considering that Rinal’ 78 has been delivering experimental music over the past five years, Post-Human seems like a perfect diving-in point. Sure, this EP is in many ways unorthodox and could benefit from a veteran producer, however there’s a hidden catchiness here, as well as the adrenaline and charm of a basement show.
