The Best Metal Singles of August 2025: Japanese Metalcore, Polish Blackened Doom, Malaysian Tech-Death Metal

The world of metal music has been quite busy this Summer, from insane festivals to unfortunate deaths of legends. With all the good and bad happenings, the world kept spinning, and our global metal scenes kept churning out solid singles, from Asia to East Europe.

Bronze Tier: Metal Single of the Month – August 2025

Bunuhdiri

“Solar Obliteration”

Self-released

Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Not only is Bunuhdiri (translated to “suicide”) one of the only metal acts I’ve discovered from Malaysia, they’re easily the most extreme I’ve heard in awhile. Founded back in 2015, the four-piece consists of vocalist Wira Rastara, guitarist Rezza, bassist Usop, and drummer Jay Ramahi (Disheveled Convolution). They recently delivered their brutal, yet technical proficiency to metalheads on a brief Japanese tour, and are headed to the Philippines next. “Solar Obliteration” is as massive as its name, an extraterrestrial devastation of tech-death metal, with a truly colossal breakdown.

Silver Tier: Metal Single of the Month – August 2025

Mysthicon

“Unbearable Silence”

Self-released

Based in Poland

Created by former Lux Occulta guitarist G’Ames, and in collaboration with members of Ukrainian death metallers Karpathian Relict, this Eastern European supergroup meets in the center of atmospheric black, doom, and prog metal. “Unbearable Silence” teases what is to come off their upcoming Bieśń album, heavily inspired by the the Dukla forest areas. Take a near-eight minute slow walk through the misty and cold nature with Mysthicon; it’s worth it.

FFO: Patriarkh, Mayhem, Behemoth

Gold Tier: Metal Single of the Month – August 2025

coldrain

“Chasing Shadows”

Released via Century Media Records

Based in Nagoya, Japan

Vocalist Masato delivers a vocal hook chorus so catchy, it’s as if the melody has been buried in my brain my whole life, waiting to be unearthed. Rumors point to an EP titled OPTIMIZE dropping this Fall, and if “Chasing Shadows” is representative of the quality of upcoming material, I’ll be the first in line. This single is perfect for both radio metal normies and nü-metalcore moshers.

FFO: Linkin Park, Enter Shikari, Of Mice & Men
