On my top 10 most listened albums of this past year, Dream Sequence by Deeparshi Roy (of Sitar Metal fame) was the perfect, emotional ambience for months. More recently, the Indian musician has returned stronger, and angrier.
While his previous album was more in Mogwai and Trent Reznor score territory, the new Fury EP takes post-rock to Meshuggah heights. Thriving on repetition, tracks like “Swadeshi Uprising” and “Bose” are hypnotic. Across five tracks, each song flows seamlessly into the next, yet not a word is spoken. Nonetheless, Deeparshi’s distress sings through his guitar riffs, similarly to Deafheaven or Russian Circles.
Fury is certainly a more anxious listening experience than Dream Sequence, but, I love that. I love that Deeparshi Bandyopadhyay Roy can drop two records this year of vastly different headspaces. And I love how the infectious rage that builds across the sixteen minutes of Fury is equally therapeutic to Deeparshi as it is to me.
