CICATRIZES DO FUTURO by DEAFKIDS dropped this year, and it’s one-of-a-kind. Marian Serine begins the experience with a huge fucking percussion display of power on “PARASITA,” before Douglas Leal joins the conversation with distorted vocals and guitar spewing like the best garage black metal show you’ve ever been to.
Following track, “CICATRIZES” is being on drugs in an underground club, far from home, for too long. The gristly beats are throbbing at a fast, mesmerizing pace, like a mantra of noise. While driven by electronics, the song sounds nonetheless human and grounded.
Across the nine tracks, Portuguese poems scream out without restraint – frustrations of apathy, trauma, and epiphany. Such existential themes to the rhythm of industrial punk EDM is jarring, yet satisfying. DEAFKIDS scratch the itch of Skinny Puppy experimentation, or Burning Man crowd energy FOMO.
“REFLEXO” churns aggressively like the pace of a folk horror snuff film score. The menacing beat is hot-to-the-touch, setting the tone for a Blood Rave headlined by Author & Punisher. The album finishes with “FEITIÇO,” “POSSESSÃO COLETIVA,” and “EM TRANSE” – equally aligned with the likes of Igorrr, Om, and Combichrist.
Across the past decade, DEAFKIDS have collaborated with other experimental artists including Iggor Cavalera‘s noise-doom project Petbrick, Rakta of Brazil, the international project Timekiller, & Test – the Brazilian grindcore duo. For CICATRIZES DO FUTURO however, it’s just two raw, creative minds in a dark room, creating music that fluctuates from dissociative Backrooms music to Samurai Jack raves.
