Between 1978 and 1991, American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer took the lives of, defiled, and even consumed seventeen men throughout the Midwest. The Mumbai-based deathgrind group Gutslit recently released their album titled Carnal, delving into the dark depths of murderous icons including David Berkowitz, Ed Kemper, Dennis Rader, and the aforementioned Dahmer.
On “Altar of Putridity,” themes of human depravity is explored, paralleling Dahmer’s legacy. With recent shows and movies also reviving the serial killer’s image and story, it’s difficult to know when a line is crossed regarding using the topic, when considering the fatal harm Dahmer delivered to many families. Fortunately, Gutslit makes it quite clear that their intentions are to shed light with criticism rather than sensationalism.
