From Yucatán, a force fusing melodic death metal and Mayan civilization emerges. A couple years ago, the Mexican quintet caught our attention with their Children of Bodom-influenced album titled Killing for Pleasure Forever (a reworked version of their 2009 debut, now featuring guitarist Rafael Barreiro, bassist David Montero, and drummer Eduardo Pérez as well as guest features aplenty). More recently, Death Scythe continue digging deep at their heritage on the new single, “Ek Balam.”
Vocalist Gerardo Mendoza growls out a tribute to the jaguar deity known to be “the guardian of the night,” “the keeper of time,” and “the protector of the skies.”
At the three-minute mark, one of the best guitar solos I’ve heard in a long time takes the spotlight; a massive kudos to founding member Roberto “Tito” Cervera is owed. The new single also proves creative chemistry with newly appointed bassist Felipe López and drummer Ricardo Cruz.
