I’m still coming to terms with Sepultura‘s recent break-up announcement. The band was pivotal in expanding the spotlight of metal music to be more international beyond the US and West Europe. Yet, after multiple lineup changes and fifteen full-length albums under their belt, sometimes it makes sense to explore other paths.
Bassist Paolo Xisto Jr. has been active with Sepultura since their early years of 1984, writing on landmark records Chaos A.D., Roots, and the more recent Quadra. In 2019 though, Paolo joined the international South American sludge metal act Cultura Tres, representing Brazil amongst the Colombian and Venezuelan musicians.
While Sepultura fans are damned to enjoy the aggression, this project is more aligned with Eyehategod. The sociopolitical moshers conjured a storm on angsty metal on their last album, Camino de Brujos. You can watch their raucous performance of “Zombies,” edited by Juan Manuel de Ferrari Montoya.
